Geetanjali Shree Career
Geetanjali is the Winner of the International Booker Prize in 2022, Gitanjali Shree is a well-known Hindi story writer and novelist. Born on June 12, 1957, in Mainpuri city of Uttar Pradesh, Geetanjali’s early education took place in Uttar Pradesh. He graduated from Lady Shri Ram College, Delhi, and MA in History from Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Many novels of Gitanjali Shree – Anugoonj, Vairagya, March Maa, and Sakura, representative stories, where elephants lived have been published. His works have been translated into English, French, German, Japanese, Serbian, Bengali, Gujarati, Urdu, etc. One of his research works – Between Two Worlds: An Intellectual Biography of Premchand – has also been published.
She has received Indu Sharma Katha Samman, Hindi Akademi Sahityakar Samman, and Dwijdev Samman, besides fellowships from the Japan Foundation, Charles Wallace Trust, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, and Institute of Higher Studies, Nonte. She has also been a Writer-in-Residence in Scotland, Switzerland, and France. Geetanjali also writes for the theater and her adaptations have been staged at home and abroad.
Geetanjali Shree has been writing for decades. His first novel ‘Mai’ and then ‘Hamara Shahar Us Baras’ were published in 1990. He also wrote novels like ‘Tirohit’ Aaya and then Aaya ‘Blank Space’. The English translation of Gitanjali Shree’s novel ‘My’ was also nominated for the ‘Crossword Award’.
Published works
His first story Belpatra was published in 1987 in Hans. After this two more of his stories appeared in ‘Hans’ one after the other. So far, five of his novels – ‘My’, ‘Hamara Shahar Us Bars’, ‘Tirohit’, ‘Blank Space’, ‘Sand-Samadhi’ have been published; And five story collections – ‘Anugoonj’, ‘Vairagya’, ‘March, Maa and Sakura’, ‘Here elephants used to live’ and ‘Representative stories’ have been published. The English translation of the novel ‘My’ was among the last four books nominated for the ‘Crossword Award’. ‘Blank Space’ has been translated into English, French and German. He has carved a niche in his writings through his ideologically clear and mature expression.
Prize
The Hindi Academy of Delhi has honored him with the Sahityakar Samman of 2000-2001. In 1994, he was awarded the UK Katha Samman for his short story collection Anugoonj. He has received Indu Sharma Katha Samman, Dwijdev Samman, besides fellowship from Japan Foundation, Charles Wallace Trust, Ministry of Culture, Government of India and Institute of Higher Studies, Nonte. International Booker Prize
Hindi writer Geetanjali Shree has been awarded the “International Booker Prize”. This is the first time in history that a Hindi writer has been given this honor. The award has been given for his novel ‘Tomb of Sand’. This is the first Hindi language novel to have been given this honor. Geetanjali Shree hails from Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh. Geetanjali’s Hindi novel was published under the name ‘Ret Samadhi‘. His novel was translated into English by Daisy Rockwell as ‘Tomb of Sand‘.
The novel ‘Tomb of Sand’ by 64-year-old Geetanjali Shree is one of her first books to be published in the UK. ‘Ret Samadhi’, published by Rajkamal Publications, was awarded the International Booker Prize at a ceremony held in London.
After receiving the honour, Geetanjali Shree said that she had never imagined in her life that she would be able to win this honour. He said that I had never imagined winning the Booker Prize. I had never even thought about Shike. I am surprised, happy and feel honored.
